I am not an in-network provider with an insurance company. However, I am considered an out-of-network provider with most insurance companies.
How to Check Your Out-of-Network Coverage for Mental Health
Locate Your Insurance Card
Start by grabbing your insurance card. Look for the customer service phone number or the member portal website—these are the keys to finding your coverage details.Call Your Insurance Company
Reach out to your insurance provider using the customer service number on your card. Be ready to provide your member ID number. When you connect with a representative, ask about your out-of-network mental health benefits. Use questions like:“What is my deductible for out-of-network mental health services?”
“How much of my deductible has already been met this year?”
“What is my reimbursement rate (or co-insurance) for out-of-network providers?”
Understand Your Deductible
Your deductible is the amount you must pay out of pocket before your insurance starts reimbursing you. For example, if your deductible is $1,500, you’ll need to pay that amount yourself before your coverage kicks in.Learn About Co-Insurance
After meeting your deductible, your insurance will cover a percentage of the cost, called co-insurance. For example, if your insurance reimburses 70%, you’ll still be responsible for 30% of the session fee.Ask About Session Limits and Pre-Authorization
Are there any limits to the number of therapy sessions covered per year?
Do you need pre-authorization for mental health services?
Request Your Out-of-Network Reimbursement Process
Confirm how to submit claims for reimbursement. Some providers require you to submit superbills (itemized receipts provided by your therapist) via mail, email, or an online portal.Use an Instant Benefits Verification Service (Optional)
Many platforms like Thrizer or Reimbursify offer tools to instantly check your OON benefits. These can simplify the process and ensure you have accurate information upfront.Compare Costs and Benefits
Once you know your coverage, you can estimate how much therapy will cost out-of-pocket versus what you’ll be reimbursed. This will help you decide whether OON therapy fits your budget.Keep Your Insurance Information Handy
Save your coverage details for easy access, and make sure you have a system for tracking claims and reimbursements as you begin therapy.

During our first appointment, we will discuss the issues that are bringing you to therapy. I will ask you many questions surrounding your current symptoms, your family history, your medical history, your history, in previous therapy (what has worked and what hasn't work), your current goals. Basically, we will touch upon who you are, where you come from, and where you want to go. You will get a sense of me, my style and have the opportunity to ask any questions about therapy.
Think of this session as the initial phase of getting to know you and establishing rapport.

It’s different for everyone. Some people see big changes in just a few months, while others stick around longer for ongoing support. We’ll figure out what makes sense for you and your goals.

100%. What we talk about in therapy stays between us (with just a few exceptions required by law, like if there’s a risk of harm to you or someone else, or there is a court subpoena—we’ll go over all of that in our first session and you will be given a document that details your rights to confidentiality and the limits of confidentiality. My goal is for you to feel completely safe sharing whatever is on your mind and heart.
